Racer Bikes Cup - Richard Anderson
7 July 2010
After my race in Bern last weekend I was looking forward to racing again in Flims. The tracks in Flims are awesome and when we arrive there a day before the race, I had a lot of fun just doing laps of the course. The weather was really nice without a cloud in the sky and the forecast was supposed to be good.
The track felt quite short and I think that was because of how enjoyable it was to ride around it. It was a fast track with a few climbs in it. One of the climbs was very steep and was also quite technical which made it challenging to ride. The main downhill into the finish was one of the best I have ridden. It was technical and the bottom half had a few wall rides that were made of wood. I haven’t really ridden anything like that before but really enjoyed taking them high having a bit of fun on them.
Our accommodation was about 40min away in a village called Valbella. We stayed at a youth hostel there and even though it was a bit of a drive to the track, the hostel was great. It was better than any of the other ones because it was quite and had a really good breakfast included!
Earlier on in the week I found out that my start position was 40th place. I was a bit annoyed to be starting so far back in the field and knew that it was going to be hard to get a 1st lap in. But these things you just have to put behind you and race as hard as you can. The race started at 11am so it gave us a bit of time to get there and allowed me to have a sleep in the day of the race which isn’t usual.
I was feeling good before the race and couldn’t wait for the gun to go off. We got called up to the line and I tried to find a good place to start even though I was out the back. The start was fast and I got box in. I managed to make up a few places in the 1st lap and by the end of it I was sitting in 26th position. I lost 1min 30sec in the 1st lap and got held up a lot until the 3rd lap. I kept on catching riders every lap. In the 4th lap I started making a bit more time up and got the 4th fastest 4th lap. Then I managed to get myself up into 8th place about half way through the 5th lap. I managed to get the 2nd fastest 5th lap and then on the last lap I got the fastest time. By this time I was only really just getting into the race. I finished strong and in 8th place which I was really happy with considering my start.
I have now got 2 weekends off racing before my 1st World Cup race in Champery. I am looking forward to racing on that track again. It will be good to get a few weeks of structured training in now before that race.
