March Update - Bevan

27 March 2008

Now that I'm on an easy week, and have a little more time, I thought I would give you an update on how everything is going.

At the moment my life consists of training, eating, training, eating, training, sleeping.... Not very exciting I know, however, it is quite interesting to see the different states of fatigue/grumpyness I go through. Appart from the mood swings, my training seems to be going really well. I'm injury free, super strong, and still very committed. Certainly having a goal, such as the Olympics ahead of you, makes it very easy to get up early in the morning when you're already shattered....

My racing seems to be coming along nicely as well. Fresh after finishing 2nd at the Contact Energy NZ National Champs in Wellington where everything went amazingly well. My coach Mark Elliot had asked me to approach the race with a couple tasks, break away on the bike and run strong off the bike. When I heard that I laughed to myself, "I can't do that this early in the year!" However, getting on the bike I felt really strong and was able to dictate the pace and control the lead pack... Throughout the windy ride, I was able to make a few breaks and drive our group to a 1.30 min lead off the chase pack.

After working so hard on the bike, I wasn't so sure how I would run. However, surprisingly, I felt fresh and strong. At the 5km mark I made my move and split our pack to shreds, with only Shane Reed able to hang on. Now here's where Triathlon gets political. In order for Tri NZ to guarantee 3 men for the Olympics, any Kiwi except for myself or Kris Gemmell needed to win. For the greater good, I thought it not best to battle it out with Shane, and do one for my country.... Still very happy with how the day went, I was pleased to see that all the hours of painful training was paying off.

Another thing I have been involved in has been the release of a website, namely: www.kiwichallenge.co.nz . It is a health and fitness website aimed at getting people in the work place active and into sport. The concept is that an animated Bevan Docherty will coach teams of 3-4 through a range of 40 activties. Those team memebers will then be rewarded with a virtual tour around NZ. You should check it out. It's worth just seeing me as a cartoon character.

Looking ahead, I also have the first round of the ITU World cup in Mooloolabaa, Australia this weekend, closely followed by the New Plymouth World cup. Then in late April, I'll be heading to Colorado, for some more pain. Fun Fun.
