Camerons Ninth Port of Tauranga Title

9 January 2012

Hi there

The day started off overcast and still - excellent racing conditions for the Port of Tauranga NZ Half Ironman Championships. I had a good start, but found myself around 1m:20s down after the 2km swim. Onto the bike I pushed the pace early trying to catch the leaders, I managed to catch Callum Millward, Sean Donnelly of Germany and Michael Poole at the 45km mark and kept up the pressure to take the running legs off the other guys. We dropped Sean late into the 90km bike and then set off onto the 21km run. I was still feeling good but knew the young boys could take their heart rates higher than me so was unsure how they would run after a fast bike ride. Callum was proving hard to drop and just sat on my shoulder for most of the run. Half way through the second lap we went onto the Mount Maunganui base track for the last time and I managed to break clear with 4kms to go.

The atmosphere down the finishing straight was pumping and I was able to enjoy my 9th title here at the Mount.

I have some major blisters on my feet - never have I had them so bad, so it's going to be feet up for a couple of days before I crank up the training again for NZ Ironman in March.

Many thanks for the continued support.

Regards

Cameron Brown
