2nd at Nutri-Grain Taupo Half Ironman
12 December 2011
Hi there
Well I had a good solid start to the New Zealand season with a second place in the Nutri-Grain Taupo Half ironman. I'm not normally racing this early in the season but thought it would be a great way to kick of the kiwi summer with a place and race I know well as the event took place entirely on over the New Zealand Ironman course.
I had a solid swim exciting in the lead group, I thought I would try and break up the lead pack straight away so I took off to try and gap the others and managed to hold a 30 second lead until i was caught by Callum Millward and Jamie Whyte at about the 30km mark. From there on we rode as a group back to the transition for the final 21km run. Callum took off straight from the gun and I just didn't have the speed to go with him, not surprising having had only two solid runs before this race so I was very pleased to hold the gap at 200m for the entire course coming home 2nd 27 seconds behind and running a solid 1:16hr Half.
I now have four weeks until the New Zealand half Ironman Championships in Tauranga so Hopefully I can get in some more speed work in before now and then. I'll be in touch before Christmas. TV coverage from yesterdays event is below.
Kind Regards Cameron
